What a year for Cascadia Magazine!

Dear reader,

2019 was quite a year for Cascadia Magazine!

We published hard-hitting journalism, from an investigation into pollution the US Navy dumped in Puget Sound to the destructive clear-cutting of British Columbia’s inland rainforest. Features on polyamory in the Pacific Northwest and efforts to combat domestic violence on the Umatilla reservation in Oregon confronted complex issues.

And as always, Cascadia Magazine also published an eclectic range of poetry, essays, photography, and fiction from across the region. Perhaps you enjoyed Corinne Manning’s short story “Ninety Days,” about the breakup of a gender-fluid relationship. Or maybe you were moved by Fiona Tinwei Lam’s poem about Canuck, Vancouver’s most famous crow, or appreciated “OG Bird Rescue Man,” a magical ode to a vanishing urban neighborhood by Robert Lashley.

Cascadia Magazine also hosted another series of fascinating readings, talks, and panel discussions–as well as receiving our first journalism award, for Paul Lask’s fantastic reporting on an all-women crew studying the impact of climate change on the forests of northeast Oregon.

We’ve accomplished a lot, and though we’re scaling back, we still plan to publish more great writing in 2020. Unlike some literary journals, we believe in paying our creators a fair rate for their work. And we can only do that with the generous support of readers like you.

Now that we have official 501(c)(3) non-profit status, your contributions to Cascadia Magazine are now deductible if you’re a US taxpayer. But more importantly, your donation helps us publish high-quality writing, art, and photography from across the Pacific Northwest.

In these days of social media fragmentation and polarization, Cascadia Magazine offers a welcome refuge, a place dedicated to a thoughtful, meaningful examination of issues and ideas in Cascadia–this beautiful, diverse place we call home. Please visit our donate page to make a contribution today.

To all of you who have made contributions in the past, thank you! We could use your help before the end of the year with another contribution so we can continue into 2020.

Sincerely,

Andrew Engelson
